And the bass is done too...

After a mammoth weekend recording session I'm pleased to report all the bass tracks are done.

The only casualities are my fingertips and my wallet...I owe the swear jar approximately £376 because of some creative profanity following the odd clanger or four. Noog kept his composure throughout. I was expecting a Yosemite Sam style eruption, complete with steam coming out of his ears to the sound of a whistling kettle, after I announced for the umpteenth time that "that'll do".

I can only assume two days of listening to nothing but bass has completely wrecked his hearing.

The drums are done... And I survived!!!

The drum tracks are done. Finished! Terminado! Finito! Eindproduct!
A big thank you to Greg "the dark" Haver for the use of his "heavier
than hell" cymbals. They sound so much better that Denleys dustbin
lids!
The drum sessions went fairly well... As well as can be expected. If
anyone has sat through a drum session they'll know exactly what I
mean.
It took 8 sessions altogether (Den thought he'd be back home smoking a
kipper after 3 nights... How wrong he was!), and they sound pretty
darn good.
There's some editing to happen and done "fixing it when we're mixing
it" but it's not a total disaster and that's pretty much a total
success!

Guitars now....... The fun starts here!

A message from Noog...

Hey...Noog's asked me to pass on a message...

"hey,
you may have been wondering what the heck is going on cos we've been quiet for a while.
or you may not.
but i'm gonna tell you anyway.
we're just (FINALLY!) finishing off writing and demoing the last couple of songs for the album.
it's gonna be 12 or 13 tracks long, some you've heard, and some that you haven't.
in a few weeks we're gonna embark on the long journey of recording it all, and if i dont go deaf in the mean time we should have it all together around xmas/early jan.
the release is penciled in for april/may next year and we'll be back on the road making your ears bleed again.
if you cant wait that long (which i think you probably can, by hey!) we'll be posting some live songs from the gig we played for the devil may care video launch on our website www.saltheband.co.uk soon!
i'm going to be videoing the whole process of recording/mixing the damn thing so you can all see the pain i'm going to go through! it'll be kinda like metallica's some kind of monster without the rehab and door slamming. well, i expect there'll be 1 or 2 doors slammed along the way.
anyway, we'll keep you posted with how it's all going and maybe teasing you with some clips along the way.
noog"

POSTED BY A JAMES BOND FAN ON ONE OF THE MAJOR JB SITES!!

I like full-on rock, so I enjoyed listening to this track. The villain of the novel uses heroin as a weapon and the colour red is thematically significant because of its association with poppies: the music video alludes to 'heroin chic' and mortality (pale make up with heavy black eye shadow), and it uses the colour red, and thus it plays effectively into the novel's themes as well as the rock music values of "sex 'n' drugs 'n' rock 'n' roll".

My only reservation is not with the track itself but whether this genre of music is really the most appropriate for the novel as a 'period piece'. Faulks set the novel in the 60s, where Fleming left off, so SAL's contemporary rock sound doesn't match the period; in that regard, a more 'retro' musical theme may have been more appropriate. It's true that for 'Casino Royale' Chris Cornell's 'You Know My Name' has a raunchy rock sound to it - perhaps giving SAL their cue - but that movie is set in the present.

I like the band, though - the energy of the performance and the aesthetics of the video - and I hope SAL go from strength to strength.

Album update...

It's been a while since we last posted, so, to show we've been busy and not sitting on our bums letting the grass grow under our feet...here's what we've been up to...

We've almost finished writing the album!

The track we wrote last week is definitely the album opener, in and out in 3 minutes with not an ounce of fat on it. Probably gonna end on a very uptempo one too, and we're definitely gonna avoid the rock cliche of 'Track-3-is-the-ballad'!

We've demoed half the songs and they sound really good. Most of the other half will get demoed in the next week, then it's on to recording for real...

SAL - Devil May Care

Our song DEVIL MAY CARE is now the official theme tune for Sebastian Faulks' James Bond Audio Book 'Devil May Care' which will be released MAY 28th!!!! Exciting stuff! Keep checking the site for news Cat x

SAL EP produced by ACE (Skunk Anansie)

SAL are a four-piece rock outfit and have worked extensively with producer Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers, Catatonia, INME) to create a fresh, punky, infectious sound that’s steadily built up a fan base since they got together in 2001 - thanks to TV appearances, radio airplay, numerous demos, UK tours, festivals and sheer hard work.
Fronted by Cat, with Noog on guitars, Chris on bass and Denley on drums, Sal have shared stages with the likes of Terris, Skindred, Reef, The Crockets, Dodgy, Kennedy Soundtrack, The Datsuns, Fydolla Ho, Bad Manners and even the mighty Saxon!
Their debut album 'Dysfunctional' released through Copro and produced by Greg Haver received rave reviews and frequent airplay on national radio.
Last year saw Sal back in the studio with ACE (former guitarist and founder of Skunk Anansie) recording their EP ‘Infatuation’ which was released last summer.

“Our aim was to capture our rockier live sound on CD, ACE heard our album and said he’d love to produce our new songs, we knew that he was on the same page as us and are really excited with the results” Says frontperson Cat

Since the EP, SAL have been busy writing their second album, which you can look out for this year.
With a collection of New material, the second Sal album coming this year tying in with a UK tour, the year 2008 promises to be an exciting year for Sal.
